READER FEEDBACK

"While I agree with you that the play intrigued and beguiled (in spite of the bum-numbing seats!) I have to ask why you felt so given to vitriol against the actor Ben Jones, who - I thought - gave a balanced and sensitive performance as a very human Shahjahan.

In this type of theatre, it is all too easy to play the melodrama and I felt that Ben's performance cut through that to create a naturalistic expose of a normal human being, shackled by power and facing the loss of a wife and a crisis of faith. I felt that his journey from confident ruler, through to broken widower and finally to cracked usurper of God, was both moving and impressive.

I realise that these things are entirely subjective, but do you not feel you have been a little harsh?"
